September 2006 "Ultimate Ride" Bombala-Delegate
Duration of ride 36 kms.
The Ride
This is an easy 30 minute ride, over good highway, with great vistas over typical Monaro grazing land. Some nice bends. A perfect ride to do on the Sunday after the Annual Celebration of Motorcycles!Simply follow the main road out of Bombala in a South Westerly direction, you will see the signs to Delegate - don't take the turnoff to Cann River and Melbourne!
As well as riding through some of the finest grazing land in the State you will see some of the newly planted softwood plantations. Watch out for kangaroos and if you stop at the Little Plains bridge there is a fair chance of seeing a platypus in the river.
Once in Delegate spend some time exploring this great little village. Just out of town is the Early Settler Hut, believed to be the first European dwelling on the Monaro. The Hut gives a great insight into the loves of the early pioneers. The Delegate River, which flows through the village, gives the visitor the chance for a peaceful stroll along one of the tributaries of the might Snowy River. Delegate River is a renowned trout fishing stream and is home to a large number of platypus.
If you are riding through on a Friday then call into the School of Arts - a red brick building next to the pre school. The School of Arts building houses a fantastic collection of mementos from the World Wars and commemorates the contribution the men and women of Delegate have made in fighting for our country.
